The Break Up, produced by Openhere for Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions, is a 2-minute parody exposing the growing chasm between genuine consumer connections and the dictatorial approach of traditional advertisers.

A Long Tail

The Break Up presents a lighthearted view of a long-term reality—individuals wield remarkable power in market spaces previously controlled by institutions. And media venues are no longer the sole domain of large scale advertisers.

The ease with which an individual can now produce and distribute media means millions now have a real voice—and infinite choice—making it increasingly difficult to reach and connect with them, much less influence their buying habits.

Evading Irreconcilable Differences

The one-sided love affair advertisers have enjoyed with consumers is breaking up. Engaging in “genuine” dialog with these new influencers and decision makers in their niches demands a whole new approach.

Our 2008 Multiple Sclerosis holiday project. Every run of Brainstorm's holiday, "Memory Machine," generated ¢.25 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society - up to $5000. It went viral fast - the $5k was just a memory by the time our holiday dinner started.

Brainstorm's 2007 holiday blog parody. A new post everyday featured the ongoing drama of an entirely fictitious corporation replete with fictitious products. Items like the "iPlanet," NPI’s personal cosmos transport. Like Ray Bradbury’s Dandelion Wine Happiness Machine, the iPlanet promises a “thoroughly self-absorbed social media experience.” Our content was tongue-in-cheek, but the chocolate and gifts we sent to commenters were quite real.
